I can’t tell you how good it feels to be on Spring Break this week. To be 100% honest, I think I was more excited for spring break than some of my students. And it’s not even that I have plans this week. In fact, I don’t really have any plans at all this week.
But the truth is, and I know I’ve mentioned this before, that this school year has been hard on me. I’ve had to reevaluate myself and how I teach. Some of the policies I implemented last year didn’t work for my students this year. So I need to find some new policies for my students next year. I also didn’t have to take days off last year. And this year, it’s been a necessity. I’ve had different things come up this year that have required my attention, and mattered more than teaching. So I had to take days off just to make sure I’m okay.
And that’s the point of today’s post. Above pretty much else, you gotta take care of yourself. If you’re not taking care of yourself, then you can’t take care of anything, or anyone, else. I’ve heard the phrase “you can’t pour from an empty cup.” And that’s so true. If you don’t have enough energy to take care of yourself, then how can you be expected to take care of other responsibilities? At the end of the day, you have to make sure you’re okay. You can’t expect to run yourself into the ground and still be okay.
I don’t know what taking care of you looks like. It could be taking a nap or a nice soak with some Epsom slats. It could be taking a day off or cleaning your house. It might be spending time with people you love or spending time alone. It might be easy, or it might be hard.
The thing is, I can’t tell you what taking care of you looks like. And I mentioned that it might be hard. The truth is, sometimes it’s hard to take care of yourself. I say that from experience. When I’ve been down on myself and running low on all kinds of energy, I find that taking care of myself is low on my priorities. But then, nothing else gets done, and I feel more burnt out and worn down. But then once I was able to actually take care of myself, I had a lot of improvements all around.
Let me give you an example of what I mean. In my sophomore year of college, I painted a canvas background. Things got bad for me mentally and with some other things going on. I never got around to finishing that painting until a year later. When I finally finished it, I hung it up in my room. It served as a reminder that things will get better. But in that year it was unfinished, I knew I wanted to be and do better. But so much stood in my way. Had I made taking care of myself more of a priority then, I think I could’ve avoided some of the hardships I put myself through, and homework struggles I encountered.
So it’s not always easy to take care of yourself, but trust me when I say it’s necessary. It makes you better, and then you can make the world better with whatever you’re doing.
While I’m on spring break this week, I may not have any actual plans. However, I’m doing what I can to take care of myself that way I can be ready for what the rest of the school year holds for me.
It’s so important to take care of yourself in the way that works for you. I know for me during this whole week off, I’m keeping my house clean, reading, catching up on sleep, and letting my body refresh. It’s not about making extravagant plans or going everywhere every day. It’s the rest that I need so that I can finish out this school year strong. Again, I don’t know what you need to take care of yourself, but I can’t stress the importance of it enough. You need to take care of yourself to be better and to make the world better. And trust me, this world needs you in it!
