Changing Styles

Do you ever find yourself changing your style? Maybe it’s your clothes, the way you write, or the you music you listen to. Sometimes your style changes, and that’s okay.

I have found myself changing styles recently. Nothing bad, just expanding and finding new things that I like. But you know what’s nice about changing styles? It doesn’t mean you abandon your old style. It means you expand.

Let me give you an example of what I mean. I own 13 pairs of Converse. For a while, that was about the only type of athletic shoes or sneakers that I owned. However, a couple years ago, I got a pair of Vans for my birthday. These were shoes that I had wanted, and finally got them. But they were so different from what I usually wear. Well, more recently, I have bought a couple other pairs of sneakers. One of them is a retro style that I really liked. My style has changed. I still wear my Converse often, but I also wear these other shoes that are nothing like Converse.

Another example I can give is that I go through periods of what I listen to. My taste in music is varied and diverse. Just because I change what style of music I am listening to does not mean I no longer like the previous style of music.

Styles change. It’s a part of life. There’s nothing wrong with that. Before December, earrings were not a part of my style. But once I got my ears pierced again, I wear earrings every day. I try to make my earrings match my outfit or get as close as possible. My style changed.

It’s not a bad thing if your style changes. And that can go with anything. Maybe it’s the style of people you associate with, or the way you approach homework. We’re people. We change. It’s part of life, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Before this semester, I approached my homework by doing what was due first. I have changed that a little bit this semester, especially during this finals week. I have worked on things that are due sooner, but if I have short tasks or easy to complete projects, I do those as well. Sometimes, I do that before some of my other work.

I have my to-do list for the next two weeks full of items. But for the most part, I do not have due dates listed for things I am doing. I do them as they come, and as a result, I have three of my final projects done already for the semester. I had a project for every class (and I’m in 7 of them), and I’m already done with three! That’s about half. My style and approach has changed a little bit. And that’s okay!

I know this post is a little different than what I have talked about recently. But I am here to tell you that it is completely fine if your style changes. In fact, in some ways, it’s encouraged! I always say that if you aren’t making progress and changing, then you’re just going to be stuck. Progress and change is natural. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be stuck. There’s a meme going around that basically says, “If you knew me in high school, you don’t know me now. Come meet me again.” I’m three years removed from high school, and I am not the same person I used to be. I’ve changed, my style has changed, and I’m not who I was.

Your style is a reflection of your personality. Your style changes as your personality changes, and again there’s nothing wrong with that. Make the changes. Let your style expand. Come into your own, whatever that may be. So change your style and let it change. Explore new things, and discover what you love. You may be surprised at how your style changes.
