Learn New Things

As a teacher, I will always advocate for learning new things. I believe that you are never too old to learn something new.

I have people that are older than me in my taekwondo classes. I love watching new adults come in to try it out. I love it even more when they stick with it. It brings me a lot of joy to watch everyone, but especially adults, come up the ranks of the program.

I mentioned on social media that I was going to be gone for two weeks. One of those weeks, I was at “Constitution Camp” as it came to be called. It was a conference for history teachers who teach the Constitution to their students. I learned so much there!

My local library also offers free classes, many of which I have attended. I love looking through the event listings to see what they are going to offer next.

There are so many resources, courses, and opportunities available in the world today. Take advantage of what you can, especially if they are free! With the exception of things that may be too strenuous, you are never too old to learn something new.

I think of a post I read on the internet. Some people were getting out of a meeting to help them get sober. They didn’t know what to do because all the people they knew were going to pull them back into their old lifestyles. However, they were telling this to a person and that person told them that now was the time to do the things they had wanted to do since they were little. One of them wanted to bake and another wanted to be a cowboy, so they were suggested for baking classes and horseback riding lessons respectively.

That was truthfully one of my favorite parts about college. I took so many cool classes, especially history classes. I took Jewish history, Cold War Europe, and Comparative Slavery, among others. I would love to be able to take more classes and learn so many more new things.

I will be the first person to tell you that I absolutely do not know everything, but I am always willing to learn. I love trivia and I think I’m pretty decent at it. I have a good memory, and I retain a lot. But I am always willing to learn more. I love taking classes and being able to learn new things.

I know that sometimes as adults, we can feel like we have too much responsibility without enough free time. And that may be the case. We have bills to pay, jobs to work at, and houses and people to care for. But if you can find time, try to learn something new.

There are so many cultures, languages, and skills yo learn about. Find a local pottery class, learn Arabic, or learn about the Masai tribe. Look for things that interest you and do them or learn about them!

Learning is a great way to grow. It helps to strengthen your brain. It also helps you to expand your skill set or your worldview. You experience more when you learn. I love learning, and not just because I’m a teacher. I have so many things that I’ve learned that I’ll never use in a classroom. There is so much out there to learn and experience. Give it a try! You might find a new skill that you love, and in the process, you might learn something about yourself too.
